For more than 20 years, NJSP officers have worked in partnership with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in the global war on terrorism. As a result of their investigative tenacity and their commitment to duty, JTTF officers, Detective Sergeant Dwayne Kelley and Detective I Tanya Schultz, were selected from a group of applicants nationwide to assist the FBI in interviewing al Qaeda members captured during Operation Enduring Freedom. Kelley’s and Schultz’s vast investigative skills and expertise included, but were not limited to, auto theft document fraud, animal rights extremists and domestic terrorists.

During the summer of 2006, Kelley and Schultz were assigned to the United States Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where high value foreign terrorism detainees are lodged. Throughout this assignment the officers distinguished themselves by displaying superior professional attributes and an unparalleled drive to succeed.

They were directly responsible for the success of the Guantanamo Bay mission in preventing further acts of domestic and international terrorism and in protecting the freedoms shared by all Americans.

For their relentless efforts in fighting the global war on terrorism, for their courage and dedication to duty The 200 Club of Essex County proudly presented Valor Awards to Det. Sgt. Dwayne Kelley and Det. I Tanya Schultz.

Det. Sgt. Kelley will donate his $1000 award to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides free or low cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers. Det. I Schultz will donate her $1000 award to the Lady Blue & Gold, established by female NJSP officers, to support a wide variety of charitable, social and educational programs.
