On April 26, 2006 at 14:05 the Cedar Grove Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 19 Longview Road. First arriving police officers reported a working fire on the second floor of the house, with a possible victim trapped. Because of the heavy fire conditions, the police officers were unable to reach the victim.

First arriving fire apparatus Truck #74 with Lt. Dan Donovan, Firefighter Mike Tower and Firefighter Chris Donlon entered the house with a 2” hand line and began attacking the blaze on the second floor. Firefighter Tower continued the fire attack in the room of origin while Lt. Donovan and Firefighter Donlon continued searching for the victim.

Finally, a man was found in the bathroom, and even though he was conscious, he panicked as the firefighters approached and he attempted to climb out a second floor window. Lt. Donovan and Firefighter Donlon quickly gained control of the victim and led him to safety.

The victim was treated at the scene by the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad along with paramedics.

The 200 Club of Essex County proudly presented Valor Awards to Lt. Dan Donovan, Firefighter Chris Donlon and Firefighter Mike Tower.
